Italy - General InformationItaly is one of the most popular vacation countries in Europe. All the seasons being good for a visit, the country is also a land celebrated for the arts. Italy is located in the south-central part of the European mainland, and is famous geographically for it's "boot-shaped" peninsula that begins in the Alps and extends for over 700 miles to the southeast into the Mediterranean Sea,with the "toe" of the boot about to "kick" the island of Sicily. To the east of the Italian peninsula is the Adriatic Sea, to the southeast the Ionian Sea, and to the west the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is bounded by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north. The Apennine Mountains form the peninsula's backbone; the Alps form its northern boundary. Several islands form part of Italy; the largest are Sicily and Sardinia.
Italy has a population of about 57 million. Rome is Italy's capital and largest city. Other major cities include Milan, Naples, Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Venice, Messina, Verona, and Padua.
The official language is Italian, but French and German are also spoken in some regions. The predominant religion is Roman Catholic.
