Greece - General Information
Greece (Hellenic Republic) also called Ellas or Hellada or Elliniki Dimocratia is a country unique of beauty that has everything to offer to the visitor. Its capital is Athens, and it is a peninsular and mountainous country situated in southern Europe. It borders the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and it is the only country of the EU without any border with another member.
For a tourist, it offers beautiful and variable landscapes, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, picturesque whitepainted or stone-built villages, passionate culture and traditions and, a heavy history, archaeology and mythology heritage.
Greece has a total area of 130.800 square km and one fifth of the area is represented by the large number of islands. In fact, Greece has more than 1400 islands but only 169 are inhabited. The majority of the islands are scattered in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey and is also were most of the tourism activities are concentrated.
Greece has a population of 10,610,000 (2000) of which 3.7 million are concentrated in Athens. 98% of Greeks belongs to the Orthodox Church.
Greece is one of the poorest countries of the European Union. It is an agricultural country. 22% of the workforce is employed for agriculture, 27% in the industry sector and 50 % in the services. Tourism and shipping is the biggest economical contributor of Greece. Greece is a parliamentary republic with a president at the head of the state.
